This is a main approach road to the city and the through route from the south to Bristol and Bath. The A36 is a main entrance route into the city from Southampton and a major through route. The area is characterised by large out-of town retail units, including some fashion retail, DIY stores and electrical retail outlets. There is a large Tesco Extra store at the furthest end of the gateway from the city and the Wiltshire College Salisbury campus at the opposite end on the roundabout linking Southampton Road to the main city ring-road.
As a single carriageway road the A36 suffers from frequent congestion at peak times. The construction of the out of town Tesco superstore over 15 years ago has lead to subsequent piecemeal development of large retail units, these have considerably added to the congestion, traffic flow problems and unattractive appearance of the Eastern Gateway to the city.
Reduce congestion on the Southampton Road and improve the visual appearance of this gateway to the city
