Background:

The 0.96 hectare/2.4 acre site is situated within Salisbury’s central area on Castle Street, a key gateway from the north. Together with the adjacent ex-Toyota garage (included as an option) it occupies a prominent corner location which is easily accessed from the Churchill Way (A36) ring road and from principal arterial routes (A338, A36 and A30) to the east. The main streets that surround the site include Castle Street to the west, Wyndham Road to the north, Albany Road to the east and Belle Vue Road to the south. The bus depot is a five minute walk from the Market Place and just two minutes from the central car park.

The site, an operational depot for Wilts and Dorset Bus Company, contains various buildings; a bus wash; two workshops; ancillary office space; and storage.

Vision Objective:

Develop the site for educational or other employment/office led mixed-use.

Proposals:

  • Consider any proposals from Wiltshire College for the development of this site as its Salisbury campus
  • Consider any requirement for a route through this site from Castle Street to Endless Street as part of the Transport and Movement strategy

Rationale:

  • To contribute to a diverse economy by redeveloping this key city centre site
  • To provide a more appropriate use for this site, more in keeping with its location
  • To provide Wiltshire College with the opportunity of relocating their Salisbury Campus from the Southampton Road and freeing up that site as part of an enhancement to the Eastern Gateway

Activity:

Several feasibility studies have been undertaken by Salisbury College (now Wiltshire College Salisbury) to determine the suitability of the site for a new educational centre.

A Concept Statement for the site was produced by Salisbury District Council Forward Planning team as guidance for potential developers.
