Vision announces further progress on the Market Place project.

Work is continuing on future plans for Salisbury’s historic Market Place. Designs are being developed for consultation and a planning application is expected to be submitted before Christmas. A team led by architects Letts Wheeler has been appointed by Salisbury Vision to progress designs for the Market Place inspired by its winning entry to the design competition in 2009.

Working with the Vision, the team has been developing proposals over the summer. This has included undertaking investigatory works such as topographical and radar surveys and a tree condition survey.

Further site investigations are still on-going. The new designs will transform the Market Place. Once completed they will deliver a more open and flexible space providing an improved setting for the Charter Market and Fair and other existing activities and events in Salisbury’s calendar.

It will also allow for a host of other activities, which may include musical concerts and functions, and live ‘big screen’ events. The design team are also looking at ways to improve the lighting of the square to enhance its use during the evenings and the overall visitor experience.

There will be more seating and planting along Blue Boar Row and we will remove unsightly and unnecessary street furniture and equipment, which clutters up the streets and Market Place at present.

Consultations with local businesses and the users of the Market Place are now taking place. This has included discussions over the summer with the City Council, which manages the Market Place and other stakeholders.

Further consultations with the Market Traders and Fair operators are happening over the next few weeks. The community will also be able to have a further say when the proposals are submitted for planning later in the year.

It is anticipated that works to deliver the scheme will start on site towards the end of 2011.

Sir Christopher Benson chairman of Salisbury Vision said: “This project provides an important and timely boost to the economy of our city. The Vision is delighted to have the continued support of Wiltshire Council for this scheme, which forms such a key element of our plans for the future of Salisbury.”

Salisbury Vision appoints DTZ and Wragge & Co as consultants

Salisbury Vision appoints DTZ and Wragge & Co as consultants to the Maltings and Central Car Park redevelopment scheme, Salisbury DTZ, the global real estate services firm, has been appointed by Salisbury Vision as commercial consultant to the Maltings and Central Car Park redevelopment project in Salisbury.

DTZ will be responsible for working alongside Wiltshire Council and the Salisbury Vision board to identify a development partner for the major retail-led mixed use scheme proposed for the site.

Wragge & Co has been appointed as legal adviser to the project. Wiltshire Council is the principal land owner of the site, covering 5.7 hectares (12.8 acres). The site lies to the west of the city’s established retail centre and has been earmarked to deliver the missing components of the city’s retail offer in a way that complements the existing retail and city centre activities. Its redevelopment will see up to 350,000 sq ft of new retail space added, plus residential, office and leisure facilities, enhancing Salisbury’s position as a regional shopping and cultural centre.

Sir Christopher Benson, Chairman of Salisbury Vision said: “The redevelopment of the Maltings and Central Car Park is a cornerstone of the Salisbury Vision, a long term programme of change and development for the city. We are committed to its redevelopment and the appointment of DTZ and Wragge & Co to identify the right development partner for this scheme sees the project start in earnest.

“The successful redevelopment of the Maltings will boost the local economy and provide vital income to enable us to fund additional development work in the city and surrounding areas.”

Paul Ellis, Head of Development Consulting at DTZ said: “The Maltings redevelopment is a once in a generation opportunity to deliver a high quality, retail-led town centre redevelopment. It is one of the best remaining, large scale retail-led city centre development sites in the country. We will be looking for a development partner who can capitalise on the opportunity to make much better use of this strategic site, greatly improve the retail offer and provide other amenities for the benefit of both residents and visitors to the city.”
