Recent Activity:  

A study of the effects of closing Blue Boar Row to ordinary traffic has been completed and the conclusions forecast the impact to be very small. In practice, this could mean a much more attractive pedestrian environment around the whole of the Market Place area.

The Vision will continue to work with the Council in reviewing the matter alongside the latter’s work on a design brief for the Market Place.

Background:

Salisbury, like most urban areas, struggles to balance the needs of all those that travel in and around the city. The medieval street pattern was not created to accommodate the type or volume of traffic movement we see today. This often leads to congestion at peak times and conflict in the city centre between vehicle and pedestrian movements.

In 2008 Wiltshire County Council commissioned a Salisbury and Wilton Transport model which is the first step in the development of the Transport and Movement Strategy. This key piece of work will be able to represent existing and future transport conditions within and in the immediate vicinity of the city and provide the means of testing the impact of various growth and Vision redevelopment scenarios.

Vision Objective:

Develop and implement an effective transport and movement strategy aimed at creating an environment which respects the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicle users, and which facilitates the greater use of public transport

Proposals:

  • Commission a Salisbury and Wilton transport model and use to develop a transport and movement strategy
  • Investigate the feasibility of incorporating the recommendations of the Environment and Transport Overview & Scrutiny Panel sub group into the transport and movement strategy
  • Where possible implement a system of ‘shared space’ with even surfaces for streets and footpaths and where signs, kerbs, railings, bollards and traffic lights are removed
